Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

1. Which precision in the timing can I achieve?
2. Will GPS Lap Timing work in my mobile phone?
3. What are GPS receiver requirements to be able to use it with the application?

1. Which precision in the timing can I achieve?

The precision in the lap times computed depends to a great extent on the reacquisition time of the GPS receiver used. The current receivers offer reacquisition times quite high that varies between 0.1 and 1 second, depending on the used chip and the number of channels.

This precision could be insufficient for the most of the competitions. However, GPS Lap Timing uses interpolation techniques based on the passed time between two fixed positions that lets the calculation to be much more precise. The final error margin will depend mainly on the speed variation of the vehicle and the positioning errors of the receiver itself.

Carried out comparative tests show that in the most situations error margins between 2 and 4 hundreds of second with respect to the lap times obtained from professional timing systems.

2. Will GPS Lap Timing work in my mobile phone?

GPS Lap Timing requirements are Bluetooth connection and Java MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1 support. If your mobile phone doesn’t meet those requirements you will not be able to run GPS Lap Timing on it.

GPS Lap Timing is offered in specific flavours which cover the most common mobile platforms. In downloads section you will be able to find a list of current available platforms and verified mobile phones.

If your mobile phone meets GPS Lap Timing requirements but you can’t find any specific version for it, you can use generic version available in downloads section. Generic version offers a common implementation which usually means a lower quality as long as it doesn’t make use of specific terminal functions. Note that in some cases, terminals meeting basic requirements could also not be able to run Generic version due to different approaches some manufacturers take to meet requirements.

Specific versions list will grow in the future to try to cover more and more different terminals.

3. What are GPS receiver requirements to be able to use it with the application?

Any GPS receiver with Bluetooth can be used if NMEA data transmission is supported. Almost all available receivers for mobile phone usage use this protocol and have Bluetooth connectivity. Therefore, the vast majority of receivers will work with GPS Lap Timing although depending on receiver specifications the precision and efficiency of the application may vary.

To get best results we recommend you use a SIRF III chip based receiver with 20 channels.
